Throughout the country, the USGS is collecting over 6,000 continuous water-quality datasets at over 2,500 sites and measuring more than 8 water-quality parameters (temperature, specific conductance, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrate, chlorophyll, and Fluorescent Dissolved Organic Matter (fDOM)). Discover what CWQ resources are available for staff, who to contact with questions or suggestions, and what efforts are in progress.

Hurricane Helene severely impacted the Asheville Field Area. This presentation looks at impacts from the storm as well as recovery efforts that were undertaken by Asheville Field Office staff as well as assistance from many outside sources. This (hopefully) once in a lifetime storm event led to significant damage and loss of data. Significant effort was put into restoring the network, assigning peak gage heights, and conducting indirect measurements to compute discharge data through the event.

Alpha Coefficient Data Mining for Image Velocimetry from the USGS Database of ADCP Measurements

To compute discharge using image velocimetry, the measured surface velocity must be related to the depth-averaged velocity; this is typically done using a simple coefficient known as the alpha coefficient. The alpha coefficient is the most significant input to the computation of discharge from imagery that is often not empirically determined, but the resulting discharge value is directly proportional to the value chosen. The USGS database contains more than half a million ADCP measurements - the profiles in these measurements can be used to inform selection of alpha. Results from a compilation of profiles at a variety of sites will be presented.

USGS Water Data in Relation to the Fundamental Science Practices

The USGS has collected water data for over 135 years. The USGS Fundamental Science Practices (FSP) have been governing water data collection and publication for the past 17 years. How familiar are you with FSP as it pertains to water data? This presentation will (1) provide a broad overview of FSP, (2) show how FSP relates to water data collection and subsequent data publication, and (3) share available OSQI resources useful for when FSP questions arise.

This presentation will accomplish these objectives by examining three focus areas; (1) discussing data collection and approval obligations in SM 502.2 Fundamental Science Practices: Planning and Conducting Data Collection and Research and SM 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release, (2) relating adherence of Water Mission Area Techniques and Methods to adherence of Fundamental Science Practices, (3) discussing mechanisms for reporting FSP questions to the Fundamental Science Practices Advisory Council (FSPAC), quality concerns to OSQI resources, and integrity concerns to the USGS Scientific Integrity Officer. Listeners will leave the presentation with a better understanding of how FSP relates to USGS Water data collection and publication and where to turn to when concerns arise.

This presentation will be given by Gary Burke, a staff scientist from the Office of Science Quality and Integrity (OSQI). Gary was a Field Office Chief for 7 years prior to joining OSQI and had collected NWIS water data for over 20 years.

The National Groundwater Monitoring Network (NGWMN) is a compilation of selected groundwater monitoring wells from Federal, State, and local groundwater monitoring networks across the nation. The NGWMN is designed to be a curated network of wells that are of known quality and can provide insight to groundwater araciality. The NGWMN Data Portal provides access to data in the Network; monitoring locations must be added to the network through a manual process. Each Water Science Center can select wells they deem appropriate for inclusion in the NGWMN. This session will cover criteria for wells to include in the NGWMN, give tips on how to determine if wells should be added or deleted, and review the application that can be used for this process.

Precipitation is a challenging parameter to model and measure accurately, making in situ observations from networks, like the approximately 3,400 USGS precipitation stations, especially valuable. Ensuring the accuracy of these observations is critical, particularly because provisional data is made publicly available in near real time. Station measurements are affected by various types of errors, several of which occur randomly in an unpredictable manner. The DRIP application is a threshold-based tool that leverages existing NOAA and USGS data to automatically identify potentially anomalous measurements to help maximize station uptime, prevent skewing of precipitation totals, and streamline field response.

An USGS team is working on a new line of standardized, field ruggedized signage designed specifically for Monitoring Locations, with production coordinated through the Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility (HIF). The goal is to allow Water Science Centers to order signs. The initial design concept includes a sign sized approximately 12 by 18 inches. Centers will be able to tailor their signs through a range of construction options—including aluminum or vinyl signs, pre-drilled mounting configurations, acrylic protective covers, and optional aluminum back plates.

ICE-Edge: Computing Continuous Under-ice Discharge on the Edge

As of Jan 5, 2026, 1,185 of the 9,004 USGS streamgages were ice-affected - approximately 13.2% of our assets that lack the capacity to deliver real-time discharge. Existing USGS under-ice methods require hours to complete, are cost prohibitive, lack the capacity to deliver continuous discharge time series, and place hydrographers at risk. ICE-Edge computes real-time under ice discharge on the “edge” (think by the riverbank) by integrating a RaspberryPi (RPi) computer, python code, uplooking Acoustic Doppler Velocity Meter (u-ADVM), FirstNet modem, and leveraging the probability concept discharge algorithm.

What to do after you’ve measured the “big one”: USGS peak-flow data for Hydrologic Technicians

Annual peak streamflow data from USGS streamgages are a critical dataset engineers and hydrologists use for flood frequency analyses that inform bridge designs, floodplain maps, and other projects in and along rivers. Updated Federal guidelines for flood-frequency analysis (Bulletin 17C) were released in 2019, which allow for better use of information published by the USGS, such as censored (greater than or less than) data, and data sources outside of streamgage records, such as historic peaks. In this workshop, attendees will learn how annual peak-flow data are used, what peak flow qualification codes mean and when to use them, what flood information should be included in station descriptions and manuscripts in SIMS, the proper application of “highest since” notes to annual peaks, proper treatment of peak flows at crest-stage gages, and lots of other flood-related facts. An example streamgage will be analyzed with the PeakFQ software to demonstrate application of USGS data to a real-world flood-frequency problem.

From Field Survey to Plotted Cross-Section: SVMobileAQ Data Collection and AreaComp3 Visualization

Accurate and efficient cross-section surveys are essential for maintaining high-quality stage-discharge ratings and index velocity gage operations. This presentation demonstrates a streamlined workflow for conducting differential level surveys of river cross-sections using the SVMobileAQ mobile application and importing the data into AreaComp3 software for visualization and analysis.
The session will cover the fundamentals of setting up a conventional differential level instrument (level gun) and collecting cross-section data in the field with SVMobileAQ. Attendees will then learn how to seamlessly import the survey data into AreaComp3 to generate plotted cross-sections referenced to gage datum.
Although commonly applied to index velocity gages, this approach provides broader benefits for streamgaging programs, including evaluation of control features at stage-discharge stations, detection of changes in channel geometry through overlay of historical surveys, and investigation of discrepancies by comparing survey results with ADCP bathymetry.
This practical, field-to-office workflow offers an accessible and efficient method for improving the quality and utility of cross-section data in water resources monitoring.

We focus on how these methods work, what they measure, how they’re deployed in the field, and the subsurface information they provide. Case studies highlight how electromagnetic methods can map subsurface conductivity and characterize aquifers, and how the HVSR passive seismic technique helps estimate sediment thickness overlying bedrock, an important input for groundwater modeling.

QRevMS is an application used for processing and reviewing ADCP midsection discharge measurements. Like QRev, QRevMS processes data loaded from the manufacture data files using automated quality checks and data filtering. This talk will discuss the workflow of the application, specifically related to post-processing and measurement review. Improvements and updates to the software will also be discussed.

Developing reliable upper-end extensions of stage-discharge rating curves is often challenging due to limited high-flow measurements. This presentation outlines a clear hierarchy of preferred approaches—starting with direct flow measurements, followed by indirect methods—and then focuses on practical in-office techniques that can be performed without field work. Methods include estimating peak flows using areal regression (Q vs. drainage area), transferring peak discharges from upstream or downstream gages, and leveraging the StreamStats cross-section cutting tool along with the AreaComp3 software program to generate control and channel geometry. These desk-based strategies allow hydrologists to effectively vet rating descriptor pairs, assess curve shape, and confidently extend ratings to higher stages.
